Devil's Slide Coast

New website focuses on the 2013 tunnel opening and recreational opportunities from Pacifica to Pillar Point.

Dedication of the Wet Weather Flow Retention Basin

Friday, November 16, 2012, 2:00-4:00PM, at the Burnham Strip – across from 525 Obispo Rd., between Highway 1 & Obispo Rd, El Granada.  Free & open to the public – registration is required by November 9.  Event hosted by the Directors of Sewer Authority Mid-Coastside, Granada Sanitary District and Montara Water & Sanitary District.

First rain causes closed beaches

Results of beach and creek-mouth water quality sampling Monday morning 10/22 after the season’s first rain has left beaches posted closed up and down the Coastside for bacteria that could make you sick.  It is the flushing of the watershed where we live that causes this pollution, from our yards, trails, and streets, to the storm drains, to the creeks, to the ocean.

Posted beaches: Linda Mar, Pillar Point Harbor at Capistrano Beach, WestPoint, and Maverick’s parking lot, and HMB beaches Roosevelt, Dunes, Venice, Francis.

Posted creeks at the beach: Calera, San Pedro, Martini, San Vicente, North & South Roosevelt, Frenchman’s, Pilarcitos, San Gregorio, Pomponio, and Gazos.

Learn about what is being done to monitor, study and implement solutions.  Find out how you can contribute to this effort.  Check out the County web page for Fitzgerald Marine Reserve ASBS Pollution Reduction Program.

SamTrans proposed Midcoast bus changes

There is still time to comment on the draft service plan:

294 would no longer run thru the Midcoast. It would only run from HMB to San Mateo with added weekend service.

17 would be extended to Pacifica 7 days/wk, but there would be no increase in frequency to replace the lost 294 through the Midcoast.

Contact Lauren Dong at SamTrans at or 650-508-6338 with your comments.

UPDATE 10/25/12:  Current 17 schedule shows about 12 trips per weekday in each direction through the Midcoast.  Current 294 schedule shows about 10 trips per weekday in each direction through the Midcoast.

FMR parking lot Planning Commission Field Study Session

October 24, 11 AM, at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve parking lot, California & North Lake St, Moss Beach.  Planning Commission Agenda

The FMR parking lot project (PLN2012-00126) involves an expansion, reconfiguration, and upgrade of the existing 39-space lot with amenities at the corner of California & Lake Street, Moss Beach.  Members of the public are welcome to address the Commission on this item at the Field Study Session.  Speakers are limited to one minute and are encouraged to limit their remarks to concerns that they believe should be addressed by staff or the Commission at the regular hearing of the item.  The public will have full opportunity to address the Commission at the future regular hearing of the item.

Coastal Development Permit application for the project was scheduled for the 9/12/12 Planning Commission hearing, but was postponed to a date uncertain by request of the applicant (Parks and DPW). Site Plan 6/11/2012

For more information about FMR projects in the works, see Fitzgerald Marine Reserve Issues Page.

UPDATE 10/22/12:
Staff Report for Planning Commission Wed. Field Study Session is now available. Attachment D shows how the project would encroach widely into the 50-ft riparian buffer zone.

"Based on Planning staff's interpretation of the applicable LCP policies and the scope of the project, staff is seeking the Planning Commission's guidance regarding the expansion, reconfiguration and upgrades to the FMR parking lot in order for the applicant (DPW/Parks) to resubmit a compliant project."

FMR Trail unrecognizable after improvements

Much public comment is circulating, from concern to outrage or heartbreak, regarding the 20- to 40-foot wide swath that has been denuded through Fitzgerald Marine Reserve as County constructs 8-foot wide ADA accessible Dardenelle Trail.
