Since 2002, Pillar Point Harbor has been included on a statewide list of contaminated water bodies due to its high concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria, which can come from any warm-blooded animal.  2008 RCD Pollution Study indicated the source of pollution was from upland areas via creeks and stormwater outfalls. RCD, in partnership with the Harbor District, continues to monitor harbor water quality and pursue investigation of upland sources.
